West Union runners earn county top-10 finishes as volleyball finals arrive
Mary Alden Lancaster and Cohen Moore each finished eighth for West Union in Wednesday's Union County cross-country championships, giving the Eagles top-10 finishers in both varsity races as the county's fall championship week continued.
Lancaster placed eighth in the girls race, with teammate Anna Kehoe finishing 13th. Moore took eighth in the boys race, according to West Union Cross Country's report from the county championship in New Albany.
Complete individual results and team standings from the October 14 meet were not available at press time. West Union hosted the county meet at BNA Park, which had been moved up a day to accommodate East Union's volleyball championship appearance.
East Union now turns to Clinton, where the unbeaten Urchins face Enterprise Clarke for the Class 2A state volleyball title at noon Thursday, October 15. East Union advanced with a 3–0 victory over Walnut in Monday's North State final.
Ingomar and New Albany get their championship opportunities Friday, October 16. Ingomar meets Resurrection Catholic for the Class 1A crown at noon after sweeping Tupelo Christian Prep on Monday.
New Albany follows at 2 p.m. against Choctaw Central in the Class 4A final. The Bulldogs reached the title match with Monday's 3–0 win at Mooreville. All three state finals are at A.E. Wood Coliseum in Clinton. Myrtle and West Union have completed their volleyball seasons.
Friday night brings three varsity football games, all at 7 p.m. East Union hosts Strayhorn, Myrtle welcomes Water Valley, and New Albany travels to South Pontotoc. Myrtle returns home after shutting out Strayhorn 41–0 on October 8.
New Albany's girls golfers have a tuneup match Thursday at Oaks Country Club before the October 19–20 state tournament at Dancing Rabbit. An opponent and starting time for the tuneup were not posted. New Albany's boys are scheduled for the Class 4A state tournament October 26–27 at Dancing Rabbit.
