Lady Hawks advance to state playoffs as Myrtle boys fall

It was a mixed bag for fans of Myrtle athletics on Tuesday, with the Lady Hawks guaranteeing themselves at least three more games this seaon and a spot in the state playoffs while the Hawks season came to a close.

In girls action, Myrtle jumped out to a lead early against Potts camp and was able to continue to pull away for a 71-49 victory.

The Lady Hawks were led by a stellar 31 point performance from Kinsley Gordon. They got nine points each from Sara Kate Thompson and Breanna Smith.

They play Thursday against Hickory Flat to determine if they play in the championship game or the consolation game.

In boys action, Myrtle ended their season 9-18 with a 70-62 loss to the Ashland Blue Devils.

In what Myrtle coach Rob Browning called a terrible shooting night, the Hawks found themselves down at halftime and at the end of the third quarter and they were not able to overcome those deficits in the final period.

AI Nugent led the Hawks with 18 points. Jaden Taylor provided 14 points and connected on four second-half 3-pointers. Elijah Thompson added 12 points.
