Myrtle takes aim at unbeaten East Union in Thursday volleyball showdown
Myrtle gets its chance to hand East Union its first loss Thursday night, taking a 16–5 record to Blue Springs for a 7 p.m. district volleyball match against the 23–0 Urchins.
The county matchup headlines the Sept. 10 varsity schedule, with West Union and Ingomar also on the road. East Union enters ranked No. 1 in Mississippi by MaxPreps and has dropped just three sets all season, winning 54.
Myrtle has already seen the challenge up close. East Union won their Aug. 22 meeting 2–0, and the Hawks will need a different result to even their season series. Both teams arrive off straight-set victories Tuesday: Myrtle swept Water Valley 3–0, while East Union beat Caledonia and New Albany 2–0 apiece.
There is district ground to gain as well. The Urchins bring a 1–0 league record into tonight’s match; Myrtle is 1–1. A Hawks victory would end East Union’s perfect start and give Myrtle its second district win.
West Union opens the county’s evening slate at 6 p.m. at Potts Camp. The Eagles are 6–15 overall, but their 2–0 district record gives this road trip more weight than the overall standings might suggest. Potts Camp is 11–4 and 1–0 in district play, setting up a meeting between teams still unbeaten in the league.
Ingomar follows at 7 p.m. against North Pontotoc in Ecru. The Falcons are 14–5 and have won all eight of their away matches. They beat North Pontotoc 2–0 in the teams’ earlier meeting and return for a non-district match against the 4–11 Vikings.
The Falcons’ latest win was a 3–0 sweep at Okolona on Tuesday, with set scores of 25–11, 25–7 and 25–15. Another road victory would carry that strong away form into the weekend.
New Albany has no varsity volleyball match listed for Thursday. The 19–7 Bulldogs return Saturday, Sept. 12, with an 8 a.m. match against Pine Grove opening their scheduled slate.
