Three playoff sweeps carry Union County volleyball forward

New Albany continued its Class 4A volleyball title defense with a commanding sweep Saturday, while East Union and Ingomar also won in straight sets to keep their postseason runs moving.

The Bulldogs overwhelmed Byhalia 25–2, 25–6, 25–4 in a 3–0 home playoff victory. New Albany improved to 29–9 with its fourth consecutive win, following victories over South Pontotoc, Corinth and Tishomingo County. Byhalia never reached double figures in a set against the Bulldogs, who won the 2025 Class 4A state championship.

Amory is next for New Albany. The Bulldogs are scheduled to host the Panthers at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, giving New Albany another home postseason assignment after Saturday's decisive victory over Byhalia.

In Blue Springs, East Union beat Kemper County 3–0 in a home playoff match. The Urchins' unbeaten season continues into a quick turnaround: their current schedule lists New Site visiting at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5. East Union will return to the court two days after eliminating Kemper County.

Ingomar dispatched Biggersville 25–14, 25–13, 25–10 for another 3–0 playoff win. The Falcons improved to 22–7 and extended their winning streak to three matches, following victories over Saltillo and Okolona. Their schedule lists Potts Camp next at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Myrtle and West Union earned their places with sweeps Thursday, Oct. 1: the Hawks beat Philadelphia 3–0, and the Eagles won 3–0 at West Bolivar. Myrtle is scheduled to host Baldwyn at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6. West Union's next listed opponent is Pine Grove, with the date and time still to be announced.

The county's football schedule resumes later in the week. Myrtle travels to Strayhorn on Thursday, Oct. 8. Friday, Oct. 9, brings home games for East Union against Bruce and New Albany against Ripley. All three kickoffs are scheduled for 7 p.m. Mississippi time.
