Myrtle boys, Murphy win Pontotoc titles; New Albany boys take second
Myrtle brought home a boys team championship and a girls individual victory Friday at the Pontotoc Cross-Country Invitational, while New Albany placed second in the large-school boys race at Cherry Creek Orchard. Runners from all five Union County high schools competed in the varsity 5-kilometer races.
Peyton Medlin led Myrtle to the Class 1A–3A boys title, finishing third in 18:43.79. Aiden Hogue followed in sixth at 19:04.26. The Hawks scored 70 points to finish ahead of runner-up Alcorn Central, which had 89, and third-place Hickory Flat, which totaled 100.
Myrtle placed all five scoring runners in the first 30 finishers. Zack Page took 15th in 20:14.56, Reese Page was 19th in 20:28.35 and Samuel Hall finished 30th in 21:19.32, completing the championship lineup.
Ally Murphy gave the Hawks their individual title in the Class 1A–3A girls race, winning in 20:15.74 ahead of Tupelo Christian's Maggie Mask, who ran 20:57.01. Abby Fuller finished 11th in 23:33.44 for Myrtle, which placed third with 96 points. Alcorn Central won with 47, followed by French Camp with 56.
New Albany put three boys in the top seven of the Class 4A–7A race. Shepherd Hardin finished second in 17:15.22, Coen Foster was fourth in 17:26.80 and Collin McElwain took seventh in 18:32.02. Iker Ojeda and Benjamin Roberts finished 20th and 21st. The Bulldogs scored 54 points, behind Senatobia's 41 and ahead of Germantown's 70.
East Union finished fifth in the small-school boys standings with 153 points and fourth in the girls standings with 100. Eli Edwards paced the Urchins' boys in 14th at 20:08.78. Kenley Conwill led the girls with a fifth-place finish in 22:54.76, while Belle Williams placed 16th in 24:01.11.
Ingomar's Austin Hancock took seventh in the small-school boys race in 19:04.60, one place ahead of West Union's Cohen Moore, who ran 19:24.26. West Union finished 11th with 268 points. In the girls race, Ryleigh Garrett placed 13th in 23:44.80 and Mary Alden Lancaster finished 14th in 23:53.63 for the Eagles.
Sophia Jimenez led New Albany's girls in the large-school division, finishing 50th in 26:43.77. Emma Russell placed 53rd in 27:17.53, and Sarah Irby was 81st in 31:01.41.
