Myrtle takes county football opener; New Albany rolls, four volleyball teams sweep

Myrtle opened its district football schedule with a 41–14 victory at East Union on Thursday, Oct. 1, extending the Hawks’ winning streak to four games on a night that also brought a decisive New Albany win and four county volleyball sweeps.

The Hawks improved to 4–1 overall and 1–0 in Class 2A Region 2. East Union fell to 1–5 and 0–1 in the region after its third consecutive loss. Myrtle has won both road games this season, following last week’s 34–8 victory at Walnut with Thursday’s win in Blue Springs.

Both teams return to region play next week: Myrtle visits Strayhorn on Thursday, Oct. 8, while East Union hosts Bruce on Friday, Oct. 9. Both kickoffs are scheduled for 7 p.m.

New Albany answered its loss at Pontotoc with a 55–7 home victory over North Pontotoc. The Bulldogs moved to 3–2 overall and 1–0 in Class 4A Region 1, earning their first home win of the season. New Albany hosts Ripley on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.

In volleyball, East Union swept Mooreville 25–18, 25–19, 25–9 in Blue Springs. Ann Fleming LeFlore supplied 17 kills and hit .385, while Reagan Johnson contributed six service aces and 27 digs, according to the MaxPreps match statistics.

Lyla Brock added 23 assists and 11 digs for the Urchins. Marley Clayton finished with seven kills, Lily Kate Johnson had six, and Taylor LeFlore recorded four total blocks. East Union also beat Mooreville 3–1 in their August meeting.

Myrtle completed a successful night in both sports by defeating visiting Philadelphia 25–13, 25–11, 25–8. The volleyball Hawks improved to 21–7, following Tuesday’s four-set victory over West Union with a straight-set finish Thursday.

Ingomar beat visiting Okolona 3–0 to reach 21–7 overall and 7–1 in Class 1A Region 3. The Falcons host Biggersville on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 9 a.m.

West Union rebounded from its loss at Myrtle with a 3–0 road victory over West Bolivar in Rosedale. New Albany’s volleyball team next hosts Byhalia on Saturday at 10 a.m.
