East Union dethrones Walnut as three county teams sweep into state volleyball finals
East Union ended Walnut’s Class 2A title defense Monday, sweeping the Wildcats to earn a state volleyball championship berth on a night when Ingomar and New Albany also won North State finals without dropping a set.
At Blue Springs, the unbeaten Urchins beat Walnut 25–17, 25–13, 25–21. East Union has swept all four playoff opponents, following victories over Kemper County, New Site and Hatley with a second win this season against Walnut. Their September meeting went four sets; this one took three.
East Union will face Enterprise Clarke at noon Thursday, October 15, for the Class 2A championship. Walnut finished 31–5, while the Urchins advanced with their perfect season intact.
Ingomar’s path back to the Class 1A final began with the closest set of the county’s three matches. The Falcons won the opener 29–27 against Tupelo Christian Prep, then took the next two sets 25–10 and 25–19 at home. Ingomar improved to 25–7 with its sixth consecutive victory.
The Falcons will defend their state title against Resurrection Catholic at noon Friday, October 16. Monday’s sweep gave Ingomar two wins in three meetings with Tupelo Christian Prep this season, after the teams split their September district matches.
New Albany earned its own return trip to defend a state championship, beating host Mooreville 25–22, 25–13, 25–19 in the Class 4A North State final. The Bulldogs improved to 32–9 and extended their winning streak to seven matches. Like East Union and Ingomar, New Albany has won each of its four playoff matches in straight sets.
Choctaw Central awaits New Albany at 2 p.m. Friday. All three state finals will be played at Mississippi College’s A.E. Wood Coliseum in Clinton. Times are Mississippi local time.
East Union’s championship appearance also changed the county’s running calendar. The school district moved the Union County cross-country meet from Thursday to Wednesday, October 14, at BNA Park, with races at 2 and 2:45 p.m. West Union hosts the meet; entries include boys from all five county schools and girls from East Union, Myrtle, West Union and New Albany.
