County cross-country titles lead off Union County’s championship week

Union County runners will race for county titles Wednesday, October 14, a day earlier than planned, before East Union, Ingomar and New Albany head to the state volleyball finals later this week.

The Union County School District moved the cross-country championships to accommodate East Union’s Thursday title match. West Union hosts the meet at the BNA Park Soccer Complex and Tallahatchie Trails in New Albany, with races at 2 p.m. and 2:45 p.m., according to the district’s revised announcement.

The varsity 5K field includes boys from all five schools: East Union, Ingomar, Myrtle, West Union and New Albany. East Union, Myrtle, West Union and New Albany also have girls entered. Ingomar’s girls have no next varsity event posted.

Volleyball’s next stop is Mississippi College’s A.E. Wood Coliseum in Clinton. East Union meets Enterprise Clarke for the Class 2A championship at noon Thursday, October 15. The Urchins arrive unbeaten after sweeping Walnut in Monday’s North State final.

Ingomar faces Resurrection Catholic for the Class 1A title at noon Friday, October 16. New Albany follows against Choctaw Central for the Class 4A championship at 2 p.m. Both teams also advanced with Monday sweeps. All three matches are at the neutral championship site. Myrtle and West Union have completed their volleyball seasons.

Friday’s football schedule brings two home games and one road trip. East Union hosts Strayhorn, Myrtle hosts Water Valley, and New Albany visits South Pontotoc on October 16. All three varsity games kick off at 7 p.m. Myrtle carries a 5–1 overall record and a 2–0 district mark into its next test.

On the golf course, New Albany’s girls have a tuneup match Thursday, October 15, at Oaks Country Club. The opponent and starting time are not posted. Their next tournament is the state championship October 19–20 at Dancing Rabbit.

New Albany’s boys next compete in the Class 4A state golf tournament October 26–27 at Dancing Rabbit. Tee times are not posted.

Next golf events remain unposted for East Union’s boys, Ingomar’s boys and girls, Myrtle’s boys and West Union’s boys. Ingomar’s boys and girls swimming teams also have no next meet posted.
