Knox scores five touchdowns to lift New Albany; Myrtle rolls on homecoming
Kylen Knox scored five touchdowns, including two in the final three minutes, as New Albany rallied past Caledonia 35–28 on Friday night. The senior running back finished with more than 400 yards of total offense in the Sept. 18 road victory.
Knox delivered the winning score on a 25-yard run with 1:16 remaining, one play after AJ Curbow intercepted a pass, according to the New Albany Gazette. His 37-yard touchdown had tied the game before Curbow gave the Bulldogs another chance.
The Gazette also credited Knox with a 95-yard touchdown run earlier in the second half. New Albany improved to 2–1 and visits Pontotoc on Sept. 25 for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Myrtle had a much wider margin on homecoming, breaking open its game with a 28-point second quarter to beat Vardaman 57–13 for its second consecutive victory.
The Hawks turned a 6–0 first-quarter lead into a 34–6 halftime advantage and improved to 2–1. Vardaman dropped to 0–4. Myrtle’s 57 points were its highest total of the season, following a 42–6 victory over Potts Camp in its previous completed game.
According to the New Albany Gazette’s game report, coach Luke Conlee leaned on heavier offensive personnel after an early fumble near the goal line. Drew Stanton and John Hunter Smith helped fuel the offense, and the defense contributed an interception return for a touchdown. Jake Murphy added a second-half rushing touchdown.
Myrtle visits Walnut on Sept. 25 before opening district play at East Union on Oct. 2.
East Union’s passing game produced four touchdowns, but Hamilton claimed its first victory of the season, 52–25. Both teams left the non-district contest at 1–3.
East Union’s MaxPreps game statistics credited Maddox Treadaway with six catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Colten Goad caught five passes for 93 yards and a touchdown, and Asher Wages added seven receptions for 55 yards and a score.
The Urchins could not follow their 48–14 win over Byers with another victory. They continue their road schedule at Falkner on Sept. 25, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
