Falkner’s late score denies East Union; Pontotoc beats New Albany

Falkner needed a late takeaway and Jonis Flynn’s winning touchdown to turn back East Union 42–34 Friday night. The finish came down to the final play, according to Tippah County Sports’ game report, and left the Urchins with a second straight road loss.

Cade Alston forced the fourth-quarter fumble that gave Falkner its chance. Ethan Adams scored four touchdowns for the Eagles, while quarterback Asa Childs completed 14 of 17 passes for two scores. Flynn supplied the deciding touchdown. The Urchins’ 34 points were their most since a 48–14 victory over Byers on Sept. 11. MaxPreps lists East Union at 1–4 and Falkner at 2–2 after the non-district game.

New Albany had a harder night at Pontotoc, falling 35–7 in another non-district game. The Bulldogs had scored at least 21 points in each of their first three completed games; Friday brought their first single-digit output of the season. Pontotoc improved to 4–0, while New Albany slipped to 2–2, according to the MaxPreps final.

Pontotoc’s victory also evened its long-running series with New Albany. Mississippi High School Football History lists 98 meetings, with each school winning 47 and four games ending in ties. Pontotoc has won all four of its games this season; New Albany’s two victories came on the road against Saltillo and Caledonia.

Myrtle visited Walnut on Friday, but a score was not available at press time. The Hawks entered the matchup 2–1 after beating Potts Camp and Vardaman in their two most recent completed games.

Myrtle is scheduled to visit East Union at 7 p.m. Oct. 2 for both schools’ Class 2A Region 2 opener. New Albany begins Class 4A Region 1 play at home against North Pontotoc at 7 p.m. the same night.
